What is a social media audit?

Defining social media audits for small business owners.

A social media audit might sound very formal or even quite scary for a small business owner, but it’s nothing to fear – in fact, quite the opposite! The benefits of conducting a thorough social media audit have the potential to boost your digital marketing strategy tenfold.

A social media audit is the process of taking a good thorough look at your online presence and reviewing all of your social media pages to gather data about what is and what isn’t working well for your small business. Conducting these regularly will ensure that your digital marketing strategy is actually working and will avoid wasting your valuable time and resources on things that are not benefiting your business.

A full social media audit would involve reviewing every single social media platform that you use – any pages on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube or more would be included. The process would involve looking at your data and analytics to review what content has been working well for you (and what hasn’t) on each individual platform in order to make informed decisions on where to focus your efforts in the future. A social media audit would also look at your bios, page layouts and general style across all the platforms to review your overall brand consistency.

During an audit, you’ll want to look at data such as your audience demographics, post frequency, and what type of content has been receiving the most engagement. You may also want to look at your competitors; analysing what is working well for them and where you might be able to differentiate yourself or spot gaps in the market. This can help to refine your social media strategy.

Why is conducting a social media audit important? Just like a traditional marketing campaign; you shouldn’t continue doing something if it doesn’t work. You wouldn’t keep printing flyers and paying for billboards if the phone never rings – what’s the point? So, why would you keep posting content that doesn’t resonate with your audience, generate leads or drive sales? A social media audit allows you to review what is and isn’t a waste of your time and for a small business, of course, this is all about maximising your return on investment.
